Traditional Chinese Medicine – Acupuncture & Herbal Remedies

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Oriental Medicine (TCOM) comprises acupuncture and herbal therapy.  TCOM addresses the body as a whole system that restores and improves balance and overall health rather than just fixing symptoms and treating the body as a collection of parts.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a primary health care modality endorsed by the World Health Organization.  More than 14 million Americans have experienced the powerful healing effects of acupuncture, which has been in existence for more than 2,500 years.

Acupuncture works by accessing the vital energy force called qi that is contained within each cell and travels in channels (meridians) throughout the body.  Acupuncture can be used to strengthen and regenerate the body's vital energy flow or remove energy blockage.

Needles are used at selected points to restore imbalances where there has been a disruption inflow.  This alteration inflow is often caused by factors including trauma, poor nutrition, medications, sub-clinical infection, toxicity, and stress.

Acupuncture is also used to prepare patients for pregnancy or to help them recover from surgery or chronic illness.

The principle behind acupuncture is that once the energy flow is restored or strengthened, symptoms are relieved, and the body can be brought back into balance and harmony, resulting in improved health and well-being.  Signs of poor energy flow include symptoms such as insomnia, pain, weight gain, and fatigue.

Diagnosis for acupuncture treatment is conducted using the tongue and pulse, which provide information on the state of the body's organs and meridians.  A personalized treatment plan is developed by discerning a patient's specific patterns of disharmony and carefully administering a point prescription selected from a range of 400 acupuncture points, each offering a specific purpose and function.

Acupuncture care can also include the use of adjunct therapies, such as Moxibustion, Cupping, and Electroacupuncture, where these are considered appropriate for the patient.

Acupuncture benefits patients of all ages and can assist in healing most health complaints across all of the body's systems including neurological, hormonal, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, fertility, muscular-skeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, and immune issues. Acupuncture can also help with cancer support, addiction, and stress relief.

Herbal Remedies

Herbal protocols work alongside acupuncture to remove energy blockages and restore, maintain, and strengthen the body.

Herbs include plants, flowers, and minerals, which have highly specific actions and effects to target disharmony or weakness within the organs, glands, and meridians.

Herb formulas are tailored to the patient's individual needs and can be administered in different forms, depending on the suitability for the patient and his or her preference.

Herbs have been used safely for thousands of years.

They rarely illicit side effects and can be taken in conjunction with western medicines.  I have been trained in herbal contraindications and herb/drug interactions.

“I generally dislike having things poking at me. Needles especially. Well, coming to Emma each time has allayed any of those fears. Her gentle touch at each session brought comfort in overcoming that dislike. Emma has supported me through my healing process and is very intuitive. She trusts me, with my own healing process and is always a professional when recommending my next steps. If I am hesitant or anxious, she's helped me acknowledge where or what could be causing those emotions and guide me to greater awareness and healing, instead of just treating the symptoms. Emma has a deep determination in working to heal and so will just prescribe what works for me. Her preference is that I am able to minimize the number of treatment sessions/supplements towards greater health and wellness so that I may enjoy a healthier life. Most importantly for me, she's assisted me in understanding and developing a balance in my life through self-care, self-maintenance through a balance of supplements and treatments.”
